Rectal prolapse happens when part of the rectum slides out through the anus. It is more common in older adults and may come with constipation, the feeling of a lump, mucus or blood, or difficulty controlling the bowel.
Treatment is usually surgical. The operation can be done through the abdomen, often laparoscopically, or from below through the perineum. The choice depends on your age, general health and the extent of the prolapse, and is decided after an examination.
Dr. Sony has presented on different laparoscopic approaches to rectal prolapse at the SELSB National Congress (2021).
